There were many fears accompanying the development of the first vaccines. One idea was that the vaccination would breed new Minotaur like creatures. It was the 18th century, and the vaccine for Smallpox was initially derived from Cowpox (hence the name vaccine from the Latin root for cow). Fortunately, no cow like humans were created. However, fear itself was a destructive force leading to the ostracisism of early adopters, notably Benjamin Jesty, who pioneered the method even before Edward Jenner, who is attributed as the developer of the vaccine.
The fear is powerful. After having ravaged the world for centuries (there is evidence of Smallpox on Mummies) Smallpox was eradicated by the 1980’s through vaccination. It is just one of the many diseases with which we no longer have to contend due to people dedicating their lives to research and development. Thanks to Donald Trump who, without consent lent his words to the title of this work. This is a ‘Minumental’ work. Minuments are small works which look at the less glorious aspects of contemporary life. At a time in which Monuments are being (rightly) scrutinised. |
