Maugean Skate
Huon Pine, Plywood, 21.5 Carat Gold36x 26 x 5.5cm

Minument to Salmon farming.

A Maugean Skate carved in Huon Pine and served on a 21.5ct gold gilded tray.

Referred to as the ‘Thylacine of the sea,’ the Gondwana era skate, found only in Macquarie Harbour, is fast approaching species collapse due to the impact of unsustainable salmon farming practices, historic mining upstream, a harbour with naturally and increasingly low oxygen levels, and a warming Ocean.

Huon Pine was selected both for its geographic proximity to the Skate’s habitat and for its ancient roots - both are relic spaces of the supercontinent Gondwana Land. Like the skate, Huon Pine populations have been significantly impacted by human activity in the form of over-logging, mining, fire and a changing climate. The use of Huon pine is inherently an act of hope, while not completely safe, the trees are now protected
